Caution! Baby at Play

Your baby starts developing their motor skills within the first few months of their life. These skills are necessary in order to develop muscle tone, movement and agility.

Playing baby games is a great way you can help strengthen your baby’s gross and fine motor skills. Your baby’s motor skills grow in leaps and bounds in the first year of their life, in which they can control the muscles needed to turn their heads and follow objects. They can also balance, sit up, crawl and eventually stand in this first year.

Here are 5 fun baby games to build these skills:

1. Get the ball rolling

This baby game is a classic that you can use to observe how your baby’s skills are developing. If your baby can sit up, have them in that position and roll a large, soft ball in their direction. At first, your baby might just try and hit the ball but as their skills develop they will learn to swat the ball in your direction

2. Touch and go

Babies rely on their tactile sensation to interact with the world around them, allowing them to use their motor skills to move around and grab objects. Playing baby games with toys like the Bumbo® stages safari play centre stimulates your baby’s tactile sensation. Focus on having your baby grasp the different applications on the Bumbo® stages safari and tug at them gently. This helps them build the muscles in their hands.

3. Block party

Bring out the play blocks for this baby game. Build a tower using the blocks that is just out of reach from your baby and encourage them to crawl towards it to knock it down. Learning to crawl is a motor skill that aids your baby with good balance.

4. Stationary play

Just because your baby is sitting in their baby seat doesn’t mean they can’t be improving their motor skills at the same time. Use the Bumbo® playtop safari to enhance your baby’s fine motor skills. Use the suction cups at the bottom of the activity play tray to stick it to any smooth surface and your baby is ready to solve the bead maze, page though the flipbook and play with the rotating ball and the elephant toy.

5. Baby games suck!

A graspable object like a rattle can help build your baby’s muscles, especially with a resistance element like suction to keep them in place. Bumbo® suction toys are perfect for baby games where your baby learns to grab and tug. Luca the Lion comes with interactive rattle beads, Zoey the Zebra can buck back and forth, Gwen the Giraffe rotates and Ozzy the Ostrich has funky feathers made up with various textures. All of these movements, textures and sounds stimulate motor skills and keep your baby entertained.
